How many layers did you use? Please explain what was on each layer.

I'm just taking a guess but probably:

Ink/Lineart Layer
Shadow Layer (set on a low opacity so it kinda blends in with the colors)
Color Layer
Sketch Layer

Also whenever I shade with making a shadow layer my drawing just looks greyish and weird and not very shaded. Tips?

@rufi, make sure you don't just shade with a shadows layer. your drawings might look dull-toned because you only shade with black. blacks and grays are good for shadows, but you should also shade with color!

@rufi, one idea is to pick a colour and shade everything with that colour, then set the shade layer to multiply, i've seen some artists do this and it gives it a really nice and tied-together effect if done properly!

although the only thing i want to comment on is the coloring. try using different colors instead of just black and white. use complimentary colors for shine, and for darkening just use a color that goes with your flat color. okay i cant really explain, i just do, so here:
