Recolor help?

Ok, so ive seen people do really good recolors like Nicki's avatar just as an example. So i have a few q...

1. How do you make the backround transparent?
2. How do you make the board go away? Do you erase it?
3. And how do you make the hair look like it was meant to be longer like in Nicki's?

I have paint so if thats not possible on paint tell me. I hit the transparent backround button and nothing happened.

Okay, I dont know how to do the bg, so okay, here it goes:
The borad, well, i usually get rid of it by coloring it in. But if in jumping i just delete it and the hair longer thing, you need to draw it by yourself.
