School FAQ + Advice Empty
PostSubject: School FAQ + Advice   School FAQ + Advice Icon_minitimeMon Aug 20, 2012 5:39 pm

Alright, since there's been a lot of threads asking for tips on (usually middle school) I decided to put together a little "guide" (not really) of things that I hear being asked a lot. Oh also, tips to Hank Hill cause she helped with this. I obviously don't know how to answer questions like changing classes, because my school was k-8. But I can make an educated guess.

First off, my biggest tip for middle school is use this time to develop good habits. DO NOT PROCRASTINATE EVER. EVER EVER EVER. If you get homework, do it immediately after you get home and then for the rest of the night you can feel relaxed and relieved you don't have to do any of it. Plus, if you keep procrastinating, it will become a problem as you progress through middle school and into high school. /TRUST ME/. Another big tip is don't be a giant butthole to all of your teachers, building relationships with them will help you in the long run. Yes, it's tempting to get rowdy and get distracted by your friends, but ultimately, it's better to not get in trouble or have to be scolded by the teacher constantly. Not only could it affect your grades (not always. most teachers are unbiased, but if they like you they could let some stuff slide) but you also get more privileges and the teacher will trust you more.

One of the very common concerns I hear from upcoming 6th graders is being nervous to change for gym. First of all, everyone else is literally just as nervous as you, I promise. They'll be too busy trying to get dressed as fast as they can to be starig at your naked body. If you're that self conscious, go to a bathroom stall. If it's taken, just wait. You will do it.

Fitting in is another one. It will just happen on its own. You shouldn't try to get caught up in being popular, because let me tell you, all of the "popular" kids when I was like 12-13 are now pregnant at 14-15, so. Take that how you will. I can guarantee there will usually be someone you can hang out with and someone that shares your interests. If you have clubs at your school I would suggest joining those. They're a great way to meet people and 8/10 of them will have very similar interests to you.

A worry about changing schools is also pretty common. Like, you're changing schools from what you knew to be familiar and normal, to a new scary school that's probably much bigger. First of all. You most likely will get lost, unless your school is small. But the thing is, within a week, even huge schools become impossible to get lost in. You will get used to it. Same with changing classes. It's kind of like repetition.

Middle school is not hard. It's like, basically the same as elementary but with the seperate classes. And you might get more homework, but it's not hard at all.

Last thing, PRACTICE GOOD HYGIENE. BRUSH YOUR TEETH. Shower every day unless you're one of the weird people who don't sweat ever, which you most likely aren't. Put effort into your appearance. Don't slather on makeup. Wash your face. Et cetera et cetera.

So I'm out of questions, but feel free to ask me some or ask for any advice with any situation, etc. If you have a problem you don't want to post, you can always pm me.

Very nice guide ^-^

And the procrastination thing Abbey is pointing out is true kiddos. I procrastinate a bunch and I've had to pay, my dad is currently helping me with that problem but don't end up like me. It sucks, you end up staying up late, waking up early, and you can get stressed (which really sucks guys it REALLY sucks). Just do your work early and know you get to have oodles of fun later.

YES OH MY GOD I CAN'T AGREE WITH THIS MORE

It's always good to be nice to your teachers, my older sister had one of my social studies teacher like ten years ago, and he remembers her last name, and uhh, let's just say he wasn't very kind to me. At all. So it's always good to leave a good impression.

And never procrastinate. I'm sure you want to o on the computer, or hangout with your friends/whatever, but homework comes first. I've made that mistake a couple times and it is awful. The work shouldn't be that hard, and if it is, don't be afraid to ask a friend, your teacher, or another adult. They're there to help you.

And if you end up hanging out with the wrong people just to be "cool" and whatnot, well, good luck.

Thanks, Abbey.

I've been to my school a couple of times. It's a nice building.

I think most people freak out because they read dork diaries and they assume that you need to be all "popular" and stuff to have a good life.

This is a really nice guide.
I actually moved right when I was going into middles school. And it really wasn't that bad. One of the girls threw a pool party, so I met all the girls. And somehow ended up signing up for a sport I didn't know existed.

My advice (I'm aloud to give advice right? ._.):

The girls aren't BIG MONSTERS that you see on TV. They're regular people, that are nice. Now there may be one rude girl, but that doesn't ruin your whole life.

It's ok to be nervous. On the first day of my new middle school, I was scared that nobody would talk to me. But think about all the times a new person came to your class. Everyone was friendly and welcoming to that person.

It'd be nice if there were some high school advice... I totally skipped regular 9th grade and am going back into public school as a sophomore. ;_;

WHAT AN AMAZING GUIDE THANK YOU. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU.

Also, I have some advice:

Books like "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" are TERRIBLE when it comes to being realistic. Middle school popularity is nothing like those books so DO NOT trust them. You don't need to worry about your "popularity status" because as long as you have friends that like you, you'll do just fine. But don't act too "cool" or act "crazy", since it won't help. I've found that when people try too hard to seem funny or cool, it just flops. So just act normal. That's all you need to do to seem cool.

It's pretty much the same as middle school but now you have real dating, driving and everything you do school-wise counts for college now. Every grade counts uvu

The best things I can say is be careful, most guys aren't really looking for true love when they date (I think you can figure out what they would want), be careful of student drivers, and be careful at parties. (You would probably see a bunch of drinking... especially if a junior or senior were hosting it). High school is basically the same as middle school, you have the same "clicks", basic subjects, and goal (succeeding).

Also I can't stress enough how important hygiene is in high school lol, you may be able to get away with it in middle school, but in high school (especially if you're a girl) you needa keep your hair and skin clean, use your deodorant, brush your teeth. You want to shower daily and wash your hair every other day.

Well if you have the credits that's one way to technically skip it I think. That and being home-schooled and getting ahead of everyone else maybe?

I'm sad to say this but I'm a horrible procrastinater I've been doing it since 4th grade and I can't seem to stop but the really weird thing is that I only do it at home not at school. I am a person who my parents put pressure on me. That's why I do it. My parents say if I don't get an A or B I will be grounded Sad and I know they are trying to scare me to do better. It only makes me even worse. I also am in advanced math and I have no clue how to do stuff. My parents forced me to do it while I am not that good in math anyways. but I never realized whenever I look at a clock I figure out how many minutes until a new hour. It's also very hard for me to make a new friend. because I am very very very very shy. I used to be shy of my uncle I saw a lot.

That must be really frustrating. But if your parents want you to do better, tell them that you can't be in advanced math. It sounds like they only want what's best for you. I'm sure they'll understand.

I have a story which kind of relates.
I had a friend who used to play volleyball who transfered from the B team to the A team. (In case you don't know the A team is much better than the B team) She couldn't figure out where to be or what to do. So she told the coach she didn't want to be on the A team anymore, and asked to be moved. And now she's getting proper teaching and help.

Hope that helped Very Happy

You shouldn't be afraid to meet new people. Your friends will change eventually, the friends you have now most likely won't be the same ones you have in a few years. Try to talk to new people.

Ignore them.

If you think they're idiots, then why bother even talkinmg to them? Whenever there's someone I don't like that's talking to me I either try to walk away or if they end up talking to me, I just end up trying to end the conversation politely.

I have the same problem! I'm taking more advanced classes and I won't have any of my friends in them. What I'm planning to do is see if there's anyone there with the same interests as me.

Yeah, I was home-schooled so I could take different classes than were offered in public high school. And thank you for the insight. ^_^
