banner sizes?

i haven't been here in a while, but i'm thinking of making an animation for my signature in a forum. i know a lot of you guys make banners and graphics. do you know any good banner sizes that won't stretch the page or be too small? thanks!

500 pixels for width and 200 pixels for height are good!
But you can try making it a little larger

My banners range between 400-600 px. in width and 150-500 px. in height depending on what I want. Do not make a perfect square, though, let alone a near-perfect square. It just looks awkward.

i use 500x170. as an alternate i'd probably use 500x200. hm, idk, i usually stick to 500px as the width though.

@aze yeah i don't like square banners either
