| Do you agree or disagree with animal testing? - Animal Testing:
Right now, millions of mice, rats, rabbits, primates, cats, dogs, and other animals are locked inside cold, barren cages in laboratories across the country. They languish in pain, ache with loneliness and long to roam free and use their minds.
Instead, all they can do is sit and wait in fear of the next terrifying and painful procedure that will be performed on them. The stress, sterility and boredom causes some animals to develop neurotic behaviors such incessantly spinning in circles, rocking back and forth and even pulling out their own hair and biting their own skin. They shake and cower in fear whenever someone walks past their cages and their blood pressure spikes drastically. After enduring lives of pain, loneliness and terror, almost all of them will be killed.
More than 100 million animals every year suffer and die in cruel chemical, drug, food and cosmetic tests, biology lessons, medical training exercises, and curiosity-driven medical experiments. Exact numbers aren't available because mice, rats, birds and cold-blooded animals—who make up more than 95 percent of animals used in experiments. To test cosmetics, household cleaners, and other consumer products, hundreds of thousands of animals are poisoned, blinded, and killed every year by cruel corporations. Mice and rats are forced to inhale toxic fumes, dogs are force-fed pesticides, and rabbits have corrosive chemicals rubbed onto their skin and eyes. Many of these tests are not even required by law, and they often produce inaccurate or misleading results; even if a product harms animals, it can still be marketed to you.
The Scientist do it because they get lots of money..... Go on google if you want type in animal testing and look at the images, i suggest if your age is lower than 10 i would not see it. that large paragraph was here in this link http://www.peta.org/issues/animals-used-for-experimentation/default2.aspx
So do you agree or disagree?

So do you agree or disagree? Oh my god. I did a debate with my class A-grade and we were against the B-grade about this on the last day of school before the holidays. Our class was supposed to agree with animal testing and state its benefites ._. So, I think it is fine to do, unless we have a better way to examine or experiment on something. There are some cures which just aren't possible without animal testing. Example, cures for an animal disease itself. The best way to test for it is on an animal. Cancer treatment was also discovered using some (if not all) help of animal testing. Another good example is the swineflu. We wouldn't have had vaccines or known it was coming from pigs (swine) if it weren't for animal testing. You can't just say the scientists just want money. Not ALL testing is corrupted. Yes some, which is illegal, but not all.

| Unless the animals are endangered (which cats, dogs, rats are not) I dunno. Pommu has a point. Animal testing isn't for nothing.
What I am against is how the meat industry makes it's money.

| I am against animal testing. Humans are animals, too. The medicines which are tested are meant for humans. Thus, we should test them on humans. That way, we still get what we want, but without hurting our fellow mammals. But, say the product being tested is for animals, then testing on the animal is justified as long as it is kept in good condition. | |

| Poor them,They should think what if they were animals! I know its Painful but they use it for us!for Medicines and Vaccination!Half of these Experiments are for our health! The other half is killing animals if it was wrong ... (The rest is for the believers of God)God (Allah) will torture us for doing these Experiments on the animals.
I'm in the middle! Half is for our health and the other half is for killing the animals if it went wrong.

| Well I mean I just feel it is wrong on the purpose and how they do it. Health is a pretty good reason on why we should... umm... use these animals. But if they have no good reason to kill these animals, that's one makes it wrong.
My friend Emily sent me a link about teenage boys abusing a kitty cat (s)! They stabbed /THEM/ and smashed /them/ on concrete! It was horrible to read about, because they had /no reason/. And even if that was a reason, why do it that way?!

| Yes, they shoudl expirement on animals for our health, but they shouldn't kill the animals after they're done. Like if they caught a severe disease maybe wait for them to die instead, because it could actually cure itself? | |

| WARNING! Lot's of text, please read though~ - Click for elaborate paper on the issue by me :3... well maybe it's not too elborate xD:
Animals have played an important role in the lives of human beings since the dawn of history. From dogs and horses to cats and cows, people have relied upon them for everything from companionship to help with everyday tasks and services. Anyone can easily see that they have helped humanity in a multitude of ways. However, today there is growing controversy surrounding the use of animals as test subjects for the products that people use each and every day. Some believe that animal testing is a necessary evil that should continue so that humans may be protected from potentially dangerous items and substances. Others, however, feel strongly that animals suffer needlessly during such product analysis and experimentation and therefore, believe that the practice should be halted or greatly limited. After thoroughly researching all angles of this issue, I have come to what I believe to be solid conclusions based upon sound reasoning.
There are quite a few pros that go hand-in-hand with animal testing such as medicine, pet supplies, and a better understanding of diseases. Without animal testing many vaccines, necessary pet items and cures for deadly diseases might not exist. This is why a large portion of people agree and support animal testing; they know that supporting animal testing will let it continue to benefit the world as it has been doing so, so far. Medicines and medical practices would be in a bit of a predicament without animal testing. Vaccines, such as those made for whooping cough, polio, and tetanus, may not exist without the aid of animal testing. Without it many doctors and veterinarians may be without some type of actual hands-on experience. A specific practice medical institutions would use is having their students go to a room where live animals, who are anaesthetized, have been stabbed repeatedly. Medical students are than advised to surgically mend the animals to a stable and healthy living condition. The animals, of course, are killed humanely after the ordeal. Without this enriching experience medical students would be missing out on a great deal of knowledge involving both stress and the actual surgery. Pet supplies are also a pro of animal testing. In this case it helps feed our house pets, zoo pets, and wild animals being taken care of in captivity. Animal testing can provide us with safe products like shampoo and pet toys. A large amount of the population adores their furry friends and without testing on other cats, dogs, etc. we might not be able to provide our own beloved pets with proper nutrition and products for their benefit. Now, the final argument for keeping animal testing involves diseases. A better overall understanding of what can be a very deep subject for some people is a strong reason why they support animal testing. Take for example, AIDS. A cure for AIDS is one of the most important goals of medical research today, and in the case of AIDS, animal testing is crucial. This is only because with animals one can obtain a much better understanding of the biology of immune-deficiency viruses. Without animal testing we might not have vaccines or cures for smallpox, polio, tetanus, rubella, anthrax and rabies. Animal testing has also given us insulin to control diabetes. As science advances and more research is gathered, we have come to advance our knowledge in the malaria cycle, tuberculosis, the function of neurons and Typhus, all because of animal testing. The process of vivisection upon animals has also helped with penicillin, open heart surgery, haemophilia, lithium, leprosy treatment, and the advancement of drugs for AIDS treatment. Without animal testing many of this might not be possible.
Many people do disagree with animal testing of course. They see how those who are left to take care of the animals won’t always treat them well, it’s also highly expensive and rather slow and the fact that the tested products may not be compatible with actual humans doesn’t sit well with many. People for Ethical Treatment of Animal (PETA) and many other groups fight for these animals, they don’t believe that animal testing is ethically right and they try their best to prevent the mistreatment of animals (tested on or otherwise) today. The biggest and most well-known reason why animal testing holds such a great amount of negativity is because not every company and facility using animal testing is treating the animals humanely. Some of those who are in charge of testing the animals will abuse them, yelling at them or striking them. Some facilities will keep animals in small cages with little to no natural light. What makes matters worse is that in cases where animals have endured stressful environments, such as those mentioned, the data will more than likely be considered inaccurate. The ability for researchers to retrieve accurate data is compromised when the animals are in a stressed state. This means that those animals, who suffered terribly, endured the torment and died for nothing. Another known issue is the cost of testing and how slow it can be. The standard practice of animal testing can be riddled with errors and problems such as what effect the drug/vaccine/chemical will have upon an actual human. Many scientists agree that it is time-consuming and expensive to get it right. In addition to that the company has to pay for all the animals’ food, water, and living areas among other things. Billions of dollars go towards animal testing; this can end up being wasteful with all the products that normally won’t make it to the shelves. Government agencies have stated that animal testing has become obsolete over the years and in a five-year program government laboratories will begin working with non-animal tests. Things such as the use of cells and computer models will be used instead of animals to test chemicals, drugs and toxins. This new method will prove to be far less expensive and much faster than the traditional animal testing methods we’ve focused on since at least the WW2 era. However, a very well backed-up reason why someone would be against animal testing would be that there is never an absolute guarantee the product will show positive results in the human portion of testing. Do the products actually work on the humans they are meant for? When it comes to pet foods and pet products it’s rather easy to find possible side effects and whether the product is safe and marketable. However, human products, such as medicine and cosmetics are being tested on animals. Although people would see monkeys as a great candidate for product testing, those primates still aren’t humans and their bodies can, and probably will, react to a product differently from a human’s. Sometimes the product can have a completely different effect unseen in the animal test trials such as in this case:
“London clinicians injected six volunteers with tiny doses of TGN1412, an experimental therapy for rheumatoid arthritis and multiple sclerosis that had previously been given, with no obvious ill effects, to mice, rats, rabbits, and monkeys. Within minutes, the human test subjects were writhing on the floor in agony. The compound was designed to dampen the immune response but it had supercharged theirs, unleashing a cascade of chemicals that sent all six to the hospital. Several of the men suffered permanent organ damage, and one man's head swelled up so horribly that British tabloids refer to the case as the ‘elephant man trial.’”
Something such as the event in thequote can show the flaw in animal testing when it comes to a product being used by an actual human. Ralph Heywood, a scientist working on the subject 20-30 years ago, had concluded that the concordance between animal and man toxicity tests was somewhere below 25% after he had assessed 30 years of the subject. He stated that “there is no reliable way of predicting what type of toxicity will develop in different species to the same compound.” He and other scientists and scholars who have looked into this agree and have come to the same conclusion. To them and many others this is a major flaw in animal testing which can’t be fixed. ______________________________________________________________________________ After reviewing all the data I am against animal testing. Not only do the cons seem sufficient enough to trump the pros but I have also found that there is newer, more humane technology that can be used to replace the traditional animal testing. The new methods include, but are not limited to, better scanning technology, computer models and cell cultures. Scanning technology would be something such as MRIs which would allow researchers to actually investigate a disease through human scans instead of animal testing. It also includes autopsies, although it they completely replace animal testing, autopsies will drastically reduce the number of test animals used. There are also computer models which can be used to simulate responses for a specific scientific experiment and/or question. They prove useful in many cases even if they can’t completely replace an entire organism. Computer models can be used too and because of this, less live animals will appear in the laboratory setting. Cell cultures also appear to be the most promising and useful. Animals have been used in the process of medical and cosmetic creation and development. Two examples I found were a while back ago in the Netherlands thousands of monkeys ended up being used, dying in the process, as they developed a polio vaccine and many animals sit in centers as cosmetic companies test their products on the animals to see if they are safe for the American public. With cell cultures though, all they need to do for vaccine development is obtain a certain type of cell and create a cell culture for it. This keeps it to where about 10 monkeys would be needed instead of the thousands once used. These cell cultures can also be used for cosmetics. Using human tissues decrease, and possibly obliterate, the need for animals in testing for vaccines and cosmetics. Another plus of cell cultures to be considered would be they are thought to be particularly “pure” when compared to that which would be extracted from an actual animal. This means that many safety precautions involving the testing of vaccines on animals are easily bypassed.
Whether using cell cultures, advanced imaging techniques or computer generated models, we as human beings do have alternative methods for testing the safety of things such as vaccines, foods, cosmetics and other products. These helpful technologies and methods are available to us right now and should be used in place of the old fashioned methods that can cause both harm and pain to our animal friends. Animals have done so much for humanity since the beginning of human history. It’s time for humans to do something for the animals to help save them from needless suffering and torment. This would be the right thing to do! The time is now to stop animal product testing.
This was my end of the year project paper. In it we had to give both pros and cons of animal testing and than give our opinion (kind of like an ethics paper). I got the best paper in my class because i have a bunch of details in it and I also give a big reason why I do not at all support animal testing. I suggest you read it ;3 here's the bibliography if you guys wanna check where I got the info~ - Works Cited:
