Puella Magi Madoka Magica IS only 12 episodes long, LULZ. Also, you should watch Soul Eater, or Fairy tail. You could try reading Kagerou Project, though. Or Baka To Test? A lot of people here like Clannad, too.

The bolded text. Even though I never watched/read Clannad I really want to and I've heard it's really emotional. Plus, it's really popular with the otaku crowd so it's guaranteed that you'll most likely like it.
Baka and Test is really humorous so if you want to feel more at ease, Baka and Test is a good suggestion.
Another anime I find a mix of both is the IDOLM@STER. Even though it's a unpopular series, it's quite good as it's a story about idols and their hardship.

I've never understood what an Otaku is.

You could try Sailor Moon! It's really cute. ;u;

@Witch you really should try it, but just remember that the first couple episodes are a little dramatic and not much fighting and stuff

Eden Of The East ( Only 11 episodes, but there are 2 movies Its on Netflix c:)

Hetalia ( The first 2 seasons are on netflix and there are only 5 minutes long!)

B Gata H Kei ( I don't know if I should recommend this anime to anyone on FF because of how mature the plot is though its NOT hentai )

I'm on episode 10 of SAO, and wow it's it's awesome. It's my new favourite anime, other than PMMM. PMMM will always have it's place in my heart, but SAO is totally my new favourite anime. My favourite character is Silica! It's too bad she doesn't appear more often, though. Other than Silica, I like Lisbeth.
